Overview

Floors That Are Never Off Duty

A hospital floor is walked on, wheeled on and cleaned around the clock. That rules out anything needing gentle treatment and puts the emphasis on durability and on how the floor is joined.

Noise matters as much as wear. A corridor above a ward carries footfall, and what goes under the floor changes that more than the surface does.

So does flatness. Beds and trolleys move constantly, and a lip at a threshold is felt every single time.

Which Flooring Systems Suit Hospitals?

Four systems for a building that never closes, and the reason each one belongs where it does.

In Detail

Phasing Matters More Than the Product

On a live hospital site the hardest part is rarely the flooring. It is working section by section without closing a route that has to stay open.

We agree the phasing before the first area is lifted, including which corridors stay live, where the hoarding goes and when each area comes back into use.

Cure times are part of that plan, not an afterthought. A resin floor that needs overnight between coats determines the schedule.

What Matters

What Matters on a Hospital Job

01

Repair Without Closing a Wing

Damaged sections can usually be cut out and replaced rather than taking up a whole corridor, which keeps the building running and keeps the cost proportionate to the damage.

Welded sheet can be patched and re-welded. Resin can be cut back and re-laid. Both are quicker than a full replacement and both are worth doing before the damage spreads.

02

What We Check Before Quoting

The substrate, the existing floor, the cleaning regime and the access. On a hospital the access question is usually the one that changes the price.

We take a moisture reading on any slab before specifying a bonded system, and we look at every transition rather than assuming they are all the same.

The quote goes in writing with the preparation and the phasing priced into it.

Pricing

What Changes the Price

A hospital job prices on access and program as much as on area.

We will not quote a rate over the phone, because a rate without a measure is a guess with a number on it. We come out, measure, test what needs testing and put it in writing.

  1. 01The area, and how much of it can be released at once
  2. 02Whether the building stays open, and which routes stay live
  3. 03The substrate, and what a moisture test says about it
  4. 04Out-of-hours or phased working, which is priced from the start
  5. 05Coving, drainage falls and transition detailing
  6. 06Removing and disposing of the existing floor

Questions

Questions About Hospital Flooring

Can you work in occupied areas?

Yes, phased and agreed in advance. That planning is part of the job rather than something arranged on the day.

What happens where floors meet?

Transitions get detailed properly so there is no trip edge and no open joint.

Do you repair existing hospital floors?

Yes. Cutting out and replacing a failed section is common work and usually the proportionate answer.

How long does an area take?

It depends on the system and the cure times involved. You get the timeline for your own areas at the survey.

Can you work nights and weekends?

Where the building needs it, yes. It is priced that way from the start.

Do you handle plant and sluice rooms?

Yes. Those are waterproof system areas and they get specified separately from the wards.
