Overview

What We Do With Hardwood

We lay new boards, replace damaged ones, and sand and refinish floors that are sound but tired. On an older house that often means saving what is already there rather than pulling it up.

Before anything goes down we check what the boards will be sitting on. A raised wood subfloor and a concrete slab behave differently, and they rule different products in and out.

Included in the job

  • New solid and engineered board
  • Sanding and refinishing
  • Board replacement and patch repair
  • Subfloor leveling and preparation

In Detail

Solid Board or Engineered Board

Solid boards can be sanded back more times over their life, which suits a raised house with a ventilated crawl space underneath.

Engineered board is built in layers that hold their shape as humidity moves through the year, so it is usually the better answer over a slab or anywhere the moisture reading is high.

What Matters

What Matters on a Hardwood Floor Job

01

Why Humidity Decides So Much Here

Wood moves with the air around it. The same species that lies flat in a dry climate can cup, gap or crown once it settles into a Louisiana summer.

That is why boards are acclimated on site before installation rather than laid the day they arrive, and why the slab gets a moisture test first.

02

Refinish or Replace

If the boards are thick enough to take another sanding, refinishing is usually the better value and keeps the original floor.

If boards are cupped, rotted, or have already been sanded down too far, replacement is the honest answer. We will tell you which one you are looking at when we see the floor.

How It Runs

How a Hardwood Floor Job Works

Four steps, and you know what happens at each one before we start.

  1. 1

    Choose the board

Solid or engineered, species, width and finish. What the room sits on narrows this before taste does.

  2. 2

    Free on-site measure

We measure, check the subfloor, and on a slab take a moisture reading. That reading decides whether solid board is even on the table.

  3. 3

    Acclimate and prepare

Boards sit in the room before they go down, and the subfloor is leveled. Skipping acclimation here is what causes gapping later.

  4. 4

    Install and finish

Laid, then sanded and finished on site where the job calls for it, so the surface is continuous rather than stopping at every board.

Problems and Care

Keeping It Right

  • Cupping, where the board edges rise higher than the middle, is almost always moisture from underneath. On a raised house that usually means the crawl space; on a slab it means the slab.

  • Gapping between boards in winter is normal and usually closes again. Gapping that does not close, or that appears within weeks of installation, points to boards that were never acclimated.

  • A finish that wears through in a traffic lane is not a failure, it is a floor asking to be refinished. That is a far smaller job than replacement, and catching it early is what keeps it that way.

Pricing

What Changes the Price

No two hardwood floor jobs price the same, because no two rooms are sitting on the same thing.

We will not quote a rate over the phone, because a rate without a measure is a guess with a number on it. We come out, measure, test what needs testing and put it in writing.

  1. 01The square footage, and how the rooms are shaped
  2. 02What the floor is sitting on, and what it reads on a moisture test
  3. 03Whether the old floor comes up, and what is under it
  4. 04How much leveling the subfloor needs before anything is laid
  5. 05The material itself, which is usually not the biggest line
  6. 06Thresholds, trims and stairs, which are slower than open floor

Questions

Questions About Hardwood Floor

Can hardwood go over a concrete slab?

Often yes, but never without testing the slab for moisture first. Many slab-built homes are better served by engineered board or a waterproof system.

How many times can a floor be refinished?

It depends on how much wear layer is left. We measure it on site rather than guess, because sanding a board that is already thin ruins it.

Do you repair floors you did not install?

Yes. Replacing damaged boards, sanding and refinishing, and putting right sections that have failed are all work we take on.

Does hardwood suit a bathroom or laundry?

No. Those are wet rooms, and they want tile or a waterproof system instead.
