Underlay Does More Than You Think
The underlay decides how the carpet feels and how long it lasts as much as the carpet does.
Fitting a good carpet on a thin underlay is the most common way to waste money on a carpet job.
At Big Easy Flooring we supply and fit carpet for homes and businesses across New Orleans, from Metairie over to Covington and Mandeville. Contact us and we will measure the rooms and price the job.
We supply and fit bedroom carpet, stair carpet and full-floor carpet, including the underlay and the trims.
Carpet is the quiet option. In a bedroom or an upstairs room it is softer underfoot and it takes noise out of the house.

Bedrooms, upstairs rooms and stairs are where it earns its place.
Choose instead: Tile flooring or a waterproof floor. We will say so at the measure.
The underlay decides how the carpet feels and how long it lasts as much as the carpet does.
Fitting a good carpet on a thin underlay is the most common way to waste money on a carpet job.
Stairs take the most traffic in a house and they wear at the nosing first.
They want a fitting method that suits the way the stair is built, which is not the same as rolling out a bedroom floor.
Four steps, and you know what happens at each one before we start.

Fiber, pile and weight for the room, and an underlay that matches. The underlay is half the decision and usually gets a tenth of the thought.
We measure, plan the seams so they fall where they are least seen, and check the subfloor and the doors.
The old floor comes up and goes away, gripper is fitted and the subfloor is made sound. Doors are eased where the new build-up needs it.
Stretched properly rather than laid loose, with the trims and the stair detailing done as part of the job.
| What you see | What it means | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Flattening in traffic lanes | Normal wear | A heavier weight carpet in the right places delays it |
| Flattening everywhere within a year | The underlay was too thin | An underlay that matches the carpet, chosen with it |
| Rippling and lifting | It was not stretched properly when it was fitted | Re-stretch it rather than replace it |
| Seams that show | The seams were placed badly | Plan them at the measure, where light and traffic do not find them |
Vacuum more often than feels necessary, especially in the first months. Most of what wears a carpet is grit working at the base of the pile, and vacuuming is what removes it.
Deal with spills straight away by blotting rather than rubbing. Rubbing spreads it into the pile and damages the fiber.
Move furniture a little now and then so the pile does not flatten permanently in the same four places, and have it professionally cleaned before it looks like it needs it.
No two carpet flooring jobs price the same, because no two rooms are sitting on the same thing.
We will not quote a rate over the phone, because a rate without a measure is a guess with a number on it. We come out, measure, test what needs testing and put it in writing.
In dry rooms, yes. In rooms that take water it is the wrong choice, and we will recommend something else.
Yes. Stairs and landings on their own are a common job.
Yes, uplift and disposal are part of the work.
Most rooms are a day or less. You get the timeline for your own job at the free consultation.
