Overview

What We Do With Granite

We help you choose granite and install it, in entry halls, kitchens and commercial spaces that need a floor which will not give up.

Granite is among the hardest floors you can lay. That is its whole argument.

In Detail

Hard Wearing, and Heavy

Granite takes traffic, grit and weight without complaint.

It is also heavy and rigid, so the structure underneath it and the flatness of the substrate matter more than with a softer floor.

What Matters

What Matters on a Granite Flooring Job

01

Finish Changes the Room

A polished granite throws light back and makes a hall feel larger. A honed finish is quieter and holds its footing better when wet.

Which one suits depends on the room and how it gets used, not on which looks better in a brochure.

02

Sealing

Granite is dense, but it still takes a seal in a floor application.

Sealing it at installation is the easiest time to do it properly.

How It Runs

How a Granite Flooring Job Works

Four steps, and you know what happens at each one before we start.

Light marble with soft veining
  1. 1

Choose the granite and the finish

Polished throws light back, honed holds its footing when wet. The room decides which, not the brochure.

  2. 2

    Free on-site measure

We measure and check that the structure will carry the weight, which on an upper floor is a real question.

  3. 3

    Prepare a rigid base

Granite is heavy and unforgiving of movement, so the substrate is made flat and stiff first.

  4. 4

    Lay, grout and seal

Laid with the variation blended, grouted, and sealed while access is easy.

Problems and Care

Keeping It Right

  • Very little, which is the argument for it. The failures that do happen are structural rather than material.

  • A cracked slab usually means deflection underneath, and replacing the piece without addressing that buys the same crack again.

  • Staining is possible where the seal has gone, particularly with oil. It is slower to stain than softer stone, not immune.

Pricing

What Changes the Price

No two granite flooring jobs price the same, because no two rooms are sitting on the same thing.

We will not quote a rate over the phone, because a rate without a measure is a guess with a number on it. We come out, measure, test what needs testing and put it in writing.

  1. 01The square footage, and how the rooms are shaped
  2. 02What the floor is sitting on, and what it reads on a moisture test
  3. 03Whether the old floor comes up, and what is under it
  4. 04How much leveling the subfloor needs before anything is laid
  5. 05The material itself, which is usually not the biggest line
  6. 06Thresholds, trims and stairs, which are slower than open floor

Questions

Questions About Granite Flooring

Is granite too heavy for an upstairs room?

Sometimes. That is a structural question and it gets answered before the floor is specified, not after.

Does granite stain?

Less than softer stone, but it is not immune. A seal deals with it.

Can you match an existing granite floor?

Sometimes. Natural stone varies batch to batch, so we will be straight with you about how close a match will be.

Polished or honed for a hallway?

Honed usually, because a hallway gets wet shoes. We will talk it through on site.
