Sealing Is Not Optional
Most natural stone is porous. Unsealed, it takes up whatever lands on it.
Sealing it properly at installation, and knowing how to keep it sealed, is what keeps a stone floor looking like stone.
At Big Easy Flooring we help you choose stone and then lay it for homes and businesses across New Orleans, from Metairie over to Covington and Mandeville. Contact us and we will measure the rooms and price the job.
We help you choose the stone for the room, then install it with our own team rather than handing it to a subcontractor.
Stone is a material where the choosing matters as much as the laying. Two slabs of the same name can behave very differently.

A polished stone that looks right in a showroom can be the wrong surface for a hall that takes wet shoes.
Finish, hardness and porosity all change what a stone will do in a particular room, and that is the conversation worth having before anything is ordered.

Entry halls and sunrooms, where a floor has to take grit from outside and strong light without fading.
Stone handles both, and it is one of the few floors that looks better for being walked on.
Four steps, and you know what happens at each one before we start.

Slate, travertine, limestone or marble, and the finish. Porosity and hardness decide as much as the look does.
We measure, check that the structure will take the weight, and look at how flat and rigid the substrate is.
Stone is unforgiving of movement, so the substrate is made flat and stiff before anything is set.
Laid with the variation blended across the floor rather than sorted into patches, then grouted and sealed.
Etching is the common one: a dull mark where something acidic sat. It is damage to the stone itself rather than to a coating, which is why cleaning does not remove it.
Staining means the seal has gone or was never there. Most stone is porous and takes up whatever lands on it.
Cracked pieces usually point to movement or a substrate that was not rigid enough. Replacing the piece without fixing the movement just buys the same crack again.
Keep acid off it. Vinegar, lemon and many household cleaners will etch limestone and marble, and no amount of sealing prevents that.
Sweep the grit and use a pH neutral cleaner. Re-seal when water stops beading rather than on a schedule, and test it in a corner first.
Mats at external doors do more for a stone floor than anything else, because the damage is mechanical and it walks in.
No two natural stone flooring jobs price the same, because no two rooms are sitting on the same thing.
We will not quote a rate over the phone, because a rate without a measure is a guess with a number on it. We come out, measure, test what needs testing and put it in writing.
It needs a flat, rigid one. Stone is unforgiving of movement, so preparation matters more than it does for a softer floor.
It depends on the stone and the traffic. We show you how to test it rather than give you a date that may not fit your floor.
Usually yes, if the stone can still be matched. We will tell you honestly if it cannot.
It is cooler than wood or carpet, which in a New Orleans summer is often the point.
