Overview

Floors That Take a Year of Traffic in a Term

A school corridor sees more feet in a week than most homes see in a year. The floor has to take that, clean easily, and stay quiet enough that a classroom next door is not listening to it.

Entrances take the worst of it. Wet shoes and grit arrive twice a day in volume, and a floor that cannot handle that wears out at the door long before the corridor.

Durability and acoustics pull in opposite directions, which is why the build-up under the floor gets as much thought as the surface.

Which Flooring Systems Suit Schools?

Four systems for a building that takes a year of traffic in a term, and the reason each one belongs where it does.

In Detail

Working Around the Calendar

School work fits the holidays, and holidays do not move. That means the schedule is built backwards from the return date, including every cure time, before anything is lifted.

We are honest at the survey about what fits in the window you have. It is better to phase across two holidays than to hand back a floor that has not cured.

Where a block can be released early, that usually buys more than adding people to the job.

What Matters

What Matters on a School Job

01

Quiet Matters as Much as Hard Wearing

Footfall noise carries in a school, particularly in a corridor above a classroom, and it is the complaint that arrives first.

What goes under the floor changes that more than the surface does. An acoustic layer in the right corridor is worth more than a heavier wear layer everywhere.

02

What We Check Before Quoting

The substrate, the existing floor, the access route and the release dates. On a school the release dates usually shape the price more than the material does.

On a slab we take a moisture reading. In a corridor we look at what is already down and whether it comes up.

The quote goes in writing, block by block, with the preparation and the phasing priced in.

Pricing

What Changes the Price

A school job prices on access and program as much as on area.

We will not quote a rate over the phone, because a rate without a measure is a guess with a number on it. We come out, measure, test what needs testing and put it in writing.

  1. 01The area, and how much of it can be released at once
  2. 02Whether the building stays open, and which routes stay live
  3. 03The substrate, and what a moisture test says about it
  4. 04Out-of-hours or phased working, which is priced from the start
  5. 05Coving, drainage falls and transition detailing
  6. 06Removing and disposing of the existing floor

Questions

Questions About School Flooring

Can you work in the holidays?

Yes, and for most schools that is the only workable window.

What suits a corridor?

Something hard wearing and easy to clean, with the acoustic build-up considered underneath.

Do you do sports halls?

Hall floors are specialist. Tell us what the space is used for and we will be straight about whether it suits us.

Can you phase across several buildings?

Yes. Phasing is normal on a school site.

What if the job will not fit one holiday?

We will tell you at the survey and phase it, rather than hand back a floor that has not cured.

Do you handle entrances and cloakrooms?

Yes, and they are worth specifying separately. They take the worst wear in the building.
