Overview

What Waterproof Actually Means

Water resistant and waterproof are two different ratings. Resistant buys you time to mop a spill. Waterproof is built to sit in water and not fail.

On this coast that distinction matters more than it does almost anywhere else, so we say plainly which rating a product carries before you choose it.

Included in the job

  • Waterproof plank and tile systems
  • Wet room and laundry floors
  • Entry halls and mud rooms
  • Moisture testing and preparation

Rooms That Need It

Bathrooms, laundries and kitchens are the obvious ones. A front hall in hurricane season belongs on the same list.

Anywhere water arrives regularly rather than occasionally is a room where a waterproof system pays for itself.

What Matters

What Matters on a Waterproof Floor Job

01

Moisture Can Come From Below

On a slab-built house, vapor rises through the concrete whatever happens at floor level.

That is a different problem from a spilled bucket, and it is why the slab gets tested before a system is specified rather than after.

02

Seams Are the Weak Point

A waterproof surface with an open seam is not a waterproof floor.

How the joints are made, and how the floor meets the wall and the shower tray, decides whether the room actually stays dry.

How It Runs

How a Waterproof Floor Job Works

Four steps, and you know what happens at each one before we start.

    Confirm the rating

Water resistant and waterproof are different ratings. We tell you which one a product carries before you choose it.

  2. 2

    Free on-site measure

We measure and test the substrate, because on a slab the water can be coming from underneath rather than from above.

  3. 3

    Prepare and tank where needed

Leveling, and in a genuine wet room the detailing that stops water reaching the structure at all.

  4. 4

    Install and seal the seams

The field is the easy part. Seams, perimeters and the junction with the shower tray are what decide whether the room stays dry.

Problems and Care

Keeping It Right

  • Almost every failure is a seam or a junction, not the material. A waterproof surface with an open joint is not a waterproof floor.

  • The second most common failure is moisture from below on a slab that was never tested. The floor holds water out perfectly and lifts because water is pushing up.

  • A soft or springy patch means water has already reached the subfloor. That needs opening up rather than covering over.

Pricing

What Changes the Price

No two waterproof floor jobs price the same, because no two rooms are sitting on the same thing.

We will not quote a rate over the phone, because a rate without a measure is a guess with a number on it. We come out, measure, test what needs testing and put it in writing.

  1. 01The square footage, and how the rooms are shaped
  2. 02What the floor is sitting on, and what it reads on a moisture test
  3. 03Whether the old floor comes up, and what is under it
  4. 04How much leveling the subfloor needs before anything is laid
  5. 05The material itself, which is usually not the biggest line
  6. 06Thresholds, trims and stairs, which are slower than open floor

Questions

Questions About Waterproof Floor

Is waterproof flooring worth it away from wet rooms?

Often yes on this coast, particularly on a ground floor that has taken water before.

Can it go over a slab?

Yes, and it is one of the better answers for a slab. The slab still gets tested for moisture first.

Does it look like plastic?

Modern waterproof plank is photographed and embossed from real board. Come and look at samples rather than take our word for it.

What about the subfloor underneath?

It still has to be flat, sound and dry. Waterproof on top does not fix a problem underneath.
